Count useful sizes, not just pieces
Start with the written contents of the selected set. Three suitcases offer a different setup from two cases and a small accessory bag. Find an exterior measurement and empty weight for each included piece, and notice when a listing supplies only a nominal size label. The medium case deserves attention: it may become the most useful bag in the set even when the photographs emphasize the largest one.
Plan for actual travelers
A three-case set can give one person a choice of sizes, or provide bags for several people traveling together. Those are different uses. If three travelers need independent cabin bags, a small-medium-large combination will not automatically solve the problem. If you normally travel alone, consider whether you have room to store two unused cases while using the third. A coordinated set works best when the sizes correspond to realistic packing situations.
Compare the hardware across the set
Do not assume that every piece has exactly the same closure, expansion feature, or handle arrangement. Look at the model-specific details for each size. Bigger cases put more demand on lifting handles and maneuverability, while a compact case needs convenient access and suitable cabin measurements. Inspect the interior photographs as well: differences in dividers, pockets, and wheel-well intrusion can matter more than a matching exterior color.
Keep capacity separate from baggage allowance
Owning three matching cases does not establish how many bags your fare includes or how much each may weigh. Check your airline and itinerary when planning a trip with multiple pieces. Confirm whether the cases nest for storage, and whether any included smaller bag has its own dimensions. Before purchase, judge the set against the cost and usefulness of the individual bags you would actually choose on their own.
Pay attention to the middle size
The middle suitcase can be the least dramatic item in a three-piece photograph but the best fit for routine travel. Check it as thoroughly as the carry-on and largest case. If it fills the gap in your existing luggage, that usefulness may matter more than obtaining the biggest possible set.
